Question: | "Moles are causing considerable disruption to the surface of our main pitch. Apart from obtaining the services of a professional mole catcher are there any other methods of control?" |
Answer/Response: | "Moles can often be controlled by removing their supply of food. A major part of the mole's diet is made up of earthworms and therefore by applying wormkiller such as lead arsenate or chlordane indirect control of the moles can be achieved. Smoke cartridges and tractor exhaust fumes can sometimes achieve useful results but the most efficient direct control involves using strychnine baited worms although great care must be taken with this material as it is a very dangerous poison. The sale or supply of strychnine for general purposes is prohibited by rules made under the Pharmacy and Poisons Act, 1933, exception being made in favour of persons who obtain written authority from the divisional offices of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food to purchase it for the express purpose of killing moles. A useful leaflet entitled "The Mole" is available as Advisory Leaflet 318 from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food." |
