Question:"Our soccer field is wet and although we would like to install a comprehensive tile drainage system we lack funds to do this. We have heard that you can make a series of parallel slits in the ground and fill these with sand. Would it be worth our while doing this on heavy soil?"
Answer/Response:"The form of drainage which you mention is known to us and we consider that it is best regarded as a supplement to an existing and sound tile drainage system. It can, however, be useful in some other circumstances, e.g. in getting surface water quickly down to permeable earth below. Where heavy sub-soil exists, as in your area, we really feel that a tile drainage system is essential. Even if such a system is introduced, sub-soil cultivation carried out and top soil ameliorated with sand, annual maintenance must be good. We consider that if we were asked to visit the ground and see the problem in situ, we would be better able to help you and in our recommendations we would bear in mind that you wish to keep costs down. General maintenance (which affects the relative dryness of the ground) could also be discussed at the time of our visit. We look forward to hearing from you."
