Question:"We are thinking of purchasing new spraying equipment. Would you recommend conventional equipment or recently-introduced CDA models?"
Answer/Response:"The new CDA sprayers have a number of advantages. The droplets produced are of more even, ideal size and less liquid therefore needs to be applied. Chemicals come pre-packed and do not need dilution, saving a great deal of time and lessening the risk of mistakes when determining application rates. Spray drift is minimised and CDA sprayers are safer to use with total weedkillers or in the vicinity of flower beds when using selectives. The main problem with CDA equipment at the present time is the fact that such sprayers are in quite an early stage of development - the range of chemicals available for use with them is still quite limited. Total and general-purpose selective weedkillers are available and fungicides, mosskillers etc. will probably be on the market shortly. CDA sprayers are easier to use but mistakes can still be made in application rate, particularly with those models which consist of a single lance only. Even application of selective weedkillers to turf surfaces is difficult with such equipment. Recently introduced equipment which has several nozzles controlled by micro-chip technology is much superior in this respect. At the present time we cannot therefore recommend CDA sprayers for general sport field use-an adequate range of chemicals is simply not available. We have no doubt, however, that in the near future such equipment will become increasingly popular."
