Question: | "We have recently installed a new watering system on the course, a project which included the excavation of a storage reservoir. Unfortunately this tank has become contaminated with sea water and we are, therefore, wondering whether it is safe to use the water on our greens. A sample of the water is enclosed for analysis." |
Answer/Response: | "Examination of the water sample from you reservoir has now been completed and it is found that the supply contains approximately 1500 parts per million of salt. Broadly speaking, the maximum allowable salt content of irrigation water is 600-1000 ppm., the latter figure being equivalent to 0.1%. A great many factors, however, will influence the safe level, e.g. soil type, grass species present, total quantity of water used, rainfall, drainage conditions, etc. On the whole, we would consider it wise to take the lower figure of 600 ppm. as the maximum salt content permissible for use under your local conditions and the water available at present should not be used unless it is possible to dilute it with fresh water in some way." |
