Question:"Two of the fairways on our course have pitches where the sward is of lush agricultural type containing considerable quantities of undesirable perennial ryegrass. Frequent cutting is required to maintain reasonable golfing surfaces and the ball tends to sink into the sward rather than being set up in the required fashion. Soil conditions are alkaline and we were wondering if sulphur treatment would be an advantage."
Answer/Response:"The situation which you describe is the classic one where sulphur could well be of benefit. Before undertaking a large scale application, however, it would be wise to establish test plots to see what rate of sulphur application produces the desired result. A 12 m ^D#x 8 m area of fairway should be divided into six plots 4 m2. Two of these plots should receive 1.0 kg of sulphur, two 0.5 kg and two 0.75 kg. Sulphur is slow acting and it may be several months before its effect on these plots can be assessed. Acidifying the soil should gradually encourage the better, finer grasses to take over and will discourage lush growth, worm activity etc. In the circumstances, the experiment is well worth carrying out."
