| Question: | "Although adequately drained, our 2nd XI hockey pitch has very muddy conditions on the surface during the playing season, also the sward is rather thin and infested with weeds. We are thinking of trying to eliminate the worms. What are your views on this and what material would you recommend?" |

| Answer/Response: | "The conditions you describe are characteristic of excessive worm activity and it would be wise to reduce them. A wormkiller containing chlordane is probably the most suitable for large areas but we suggest you wait until the early autumn to apply the wormkiller when active casting is resumed after the summer. At this time the worms are fairly near the surface. Our advisory leaflet on the use of chlordane as a wormkiller is enclosed. If sufficient control is achieved, the playing surface should become much drier and free of mud and this will encourage a stronger sward to develop. Further weed invasion will be reduced both by the reduction in casting and by the increased competition from the grass sward." |
