Question:"The spring fertilizer dressing was carefully applied to the bowling green by some helpful members in the absence of our Greenkeeper who is ill at present. We have had warm, dry weather since this application and the green is now burnt considerably - some patches quite severely. We would appreciate your advice."
Answer/Response:"We are sorry to hear the green has been scorched after you applied the fertilizer dressing. Scorching will occur within a couple of days when a fertilizer is applied during dry weather unless there is sufficient rain or added water to wash all the fertilizer off the grass leaves. As was stressed in the report following the last visit, fertilizers should be applied during showery weather and thoroughly watered in if sufficient rain does not fall within two days of making the application. Variations in the degree of scorching will most likely be the result of uneven application of the fertilizer. If the green is not yet normal, it should be solid tine aerated and then thoroughly watered artificially to aid the recovery of the grass and to ensure the fertilizer is washed in."
