Question: | "We have noted areas in the rough where the grass is coloured red and we are concerned that this may spread to our greens. A sample of the affected grass is enclosed and we would be obliged if you could tell us the cause of the condition." |
Answer/Response: | "The damage to the grass appears to have been caused by the activity of leaf sucking aphids which were present in the sample in considerable numbers. It is not uncommon for aphid populations to become very large following mild winters, and if the spring is dry and warm the aphids become more widespread since they are able to migrate in such conditions. We seldom meet trouble on turf however. It is unlikely that the greens will be affected by the aphids since such activity has not been experienced, to our knowledge, on regularly mown grass. If the amount of damage to the rough warrants control measures then it would be wise to treat with a suitable insecticide such as one based on di-methoate and there are several proprietary products available. Obviously you should stick to the maker's recommendations and please take care because the material is rather toxic. If you do not wish to use such a toxic material you could try a Derris product." |
