Question:"I have advocated the hollow tine aeration of our green this autumn because it seems very compacted following a lot of play in our Jubilee Year. Because this was done only two years ago I have been severely criticised for wanting to do it again. Is it correct to say that hollow tine aeration should only carried out once every three years?"
Answer/Response:"It has been quite widely accepted in the past that hollow tine aeration of fine turf should be carried out not more than once every three years. This was accepted because hollow tine aeration in addition to producing surface disturbance also produced favourable conditions for the invasion of annual meadow-grass and weeds. In most sports greater participation has produced problems by creating more surface compaction. The principle method by which the effects of compaction can be compensated for in normal maintenance is by hollow tine aeration. The best time for this work is in the autumn prior to applying the main top dressing. The work should be carried out as is necessary according to local conditions rather than at specified intervals and in some cases it may be required annually. The interval between operations is also related to the nature and intensity of the work done i.e. depth and spacing of holes."
