Question:"We have just completed the drainage work advised by you for one of our playing fields which had been unsatisfactory and are ready to proceed with cultivations and seed bed preparation. Ploughing was recommended and I wonder whether you would consider rotary cultivation a suitable alternative?"
Answer/Response:"The soil should not be left over the winter in the fine condition that it would be if the seed bed were prepared at this late date. We would consider that the best approach at this time would be to plough the area through the whole top soil depth using a plough fitted with a skim coulter. The soil should be left in a rough condition over the winter and cultivations should be resumed when suitable conditions return in the spring with the aim of sowing before the end of April. The use of a plough fitted with a skim coulter is preferable to a rotary cultivator since it is possible to bury the old turf completely thus preventing any of the old vegetation re-establishing. With rotary cultivators there is a greater danger of breaking the soil down into too fine a condition and also of forming a hard pan, which would impede drainage. An alternative procedure would be to rotovate to a shallow depth so as to break up the old turf and then to follow this by ploughing. Whilst this hastens the natural break down of the old turf it does involve another operation."
