Question:"During the last week or two a number of discoloured patches have appeared on our bowling green. The older basal leaves of the grass are affected such that the patches have a whitish bleached appearance. I have not seen this before and would like to know the cause and what control measures are necessary. A piece of the affected turf is enclosed."
Answer/Response:"Examination of the sample revealed colonisation of the lower senescent leaves and the fibre layer by a fungus, which confirms the symptoms you describe as typical of those produced by an unidentified basidiomycete. This fungus (belonging to the same group as those producing fairy rings) has never been identified since reproductive structures of the fungus have never been found and these are necessary for a positive identification. This condition appears most frequently during the autumn, particularly where the turf is rather fibrous. Although the symptoms will gradually disappear a fungicide treatment will hasten this and help recovery. One treatment with an organic mercury fungicide applied to the whole green at the maker's recommended curative rate should suffice."
