Question: | "We have been using a balanced fertilizer on our square for some years but we have been disappointed with the condition of the sward and grass growth during the last couple of seasons. A soil analysis shows that the soil is too acid. We aim to correct this by liming and would like to know which liming material we should use?" |
Answer/Response: | "We recommend that you use ground carbonate of lime - ground limestone or ground chalk. These materials which can be stored for quite long periods in a dry building are easier to distribute and are less unpleasant to handle than some other forms of lime. Other common forms of lime are burnt or quick lime and hydrated lime. These substances do not store very well and have the great disadvantage that they will scorch fine turf. Quick lime will scorch quite severely. It is of course important that the rate of liming should be related to the type of soil and the state of the turf as well as to the degree of acidity." |
