Question:"Our greens are constructed on clay and few have drainage. In recent years the greens have become rather heavy in the surface although hollow tine aeration has been carried out on two occasions in the last three years. It has been suggested that the greens should be drained using a mole plough. I understand a 2 in. mole fitted on a small machine, as used to install small water pipes, causes very little surface disturbance and would be suitable for the work. Your comments on such a project would be valued."
Answer/Response:"Mole draining has been carried out on golf greens before but seldom with great success. For a fine turf area mole drainage is not considered to be sufficiently permanent bearing in mind that disturbance of the surface is inevitable during the work and also that settlement may occur during later years as the moles collapse. If the work were carried out the mole drains would have to be provided with a steady adequate fall which could prove a practical obstacle. To be of value the drains would need to be connected into conventional tile main drains which have good outfalls. Since the project has uncertain value and involves considerable work it would seem to be more appropriate to install an orthodox tile drainage system. If the sub-soil is very impermeable as you suggest, it may be necessary to consider the installation of a drainage layer under the putting area to provide good drainage overall. If it is not possible to advise fully on such a matter without first-hand knowledge of conditions and we suggest a visit by an Advisory Officer would be of value, as it would then be possible to offer positive advice."
