Question:"We are having to reorganise our course since we are losing three greens due to motorway construction. We understand that new greens are now constructed over a layer of crushed stone. Is this the best method of drainage?"
Answer/Response:"The stone layer to which you refer is usually placed about 10 in. below the surface and produces very efficient drainage. The stone layer (6 in. firmed depth and 'blinded' with 2 in. gritty ash or very coarse sand) must be laid over a conventional tile drainage system which is connected to an efficient outlet. This form of drainage is of particular value for golf greens constructed on heavy clay soils and for sites with a drainage problem. Drainage is independent of these natural features with this type of construction. Where greens are constructed on freely draining material such as sand or chalk a stone layer would not be necessary, adequate drainage being provided though the natural material, possibly supplemented by a conventional tile drainage system. However, in these circumstances, it is desirable to sub-soil cultivate the putting area in order to ensure that any compaction is broken up particularly if heavy machinery has been used. In either case it is important that the top soil used on the putting area should have a texture giving high permeability so facilitating good surface drainage. This may necessitate ameliorating the existing top soil with sand and peat. Since it is important to ensure the basic construction of the new greens is carried out correctly we could be of further assistance to you by making an advisory visit so that all the relevant circumstances can be examined."
