Question:"Since our courts are maintained by volunteers, we find it difficult to carry out all the maintenance treatments at the right time. As noted in your last advisory report, our courts have some weeds on them, and they need treating. Could we apply a weedkiller now, since with the courts closed it seems a good time to do it?"
Answer/Response:"The selective herbicides commonly used on turf have as their active ingredients synthetic plant growth regulators. The herbicides are absorbed mainly through the leaves, after which they are distributed through the plant where they inhibit or modify growth. The intake and translocation of the herbicides is best when active growth is occurring and therefore with a winter application it is unlikely that sufficient of the chemical will be absorbed to produce the desired 'kill'. Also during the winter it is likely to be difficult to select a still, settled period in which to make the application. It is recommended that you leave this operation until growth commences in the spring when you will have a better chance of getting good results from your efforts. It may be possible to make an application of weedkiller in the spring before play gets under way and volunteers diminish. Our advisory leaflet on the use of selective weedkillers is enclosed for your interest."
