Question:"We have a playing field which is drained by a conventional herringbone land tile system. The drains are backfilled to within 5-6 in. of the surface but the drains were not laid as close together as was suggested at the time of construction due to lack of funds. We feel that the drainage could usefully be improved and have read about a technique called sand slitting. Could you advise on this for improving our field?"
Answer/Response:"Sand slitting is a relatively new technique which assists the removal of surface water and would supplement the existing tile drainage system. Slits which are filled with sand are drawn across the existing drain lines at about 18-24 in. centres and so that the slits connect with the backfilling. Slits which have been installed, vary from ½ to 2 in. in width. The optimum width is not yet established and neither is the optimum spacing which may be as close as 12 in. The narrow slits can be 'cut' through the soil without soil removal and with only a little surface disruption but formation of the wider slits involves the removal of some soil so as to prevent excessive surface disruption. Machines are now becoming available for producing both types of slits and for filling them with sand. The cost at present varies from about £300/acre for narrow slits to £1,000 for the wider ones. If you are interested in having the work carried out we would be glad to discuss the matter with you further."
