Question:"I am sending you a leaflet sent to us about compost. It would be useful for us to have something easy to get so that we can begin immediately next spring to put down the correct compost."
Answer/Response:"After studying the leaflet you sent we feel the salient factor is the description, "soil-less seed and potting compost". No doubt this material is very good for the purpose advertized, e.g., seed and potting compost but we are sure that it is not suitable for your greens. The use of a compost whose main constituent is peat or similar is not advised because it would lead to a very soft, spongy surface and encourage the formation of fibre. We have the same problems of supply in this country but generally we can find soil locally when mixing the compost ourselves, or even firms willing to supply top dressing as specified by us."
