Question:"A large area of the 18th fairway was drained about 100 years ago with 2 in. tiles laid at a depth of 4 ft. 6 in. The entire system is beginning to collapse and the club has decided to go ahead and install a new drainage system in this area. We are told that every time a new line of 3 in. pipes are laid it will be necessary to dig down 4 ft. 6 in. and either remove the old ones or smash them in situ, otherwise the new tiles will not draw the water properly. Could you advise us on this?"
Answer/Response:"It is unnecessary to remove the old drainage system before you introduce the new drains. It would be desirable to lay the new drains between the lines of the deeper drains, but, more important, they should have the correct line of flow. Main drains should be laid as far as practicable with the maximum fall of the land, lateral drains feeding these running at an angle across the main fall, i.e., 45-60° off the mains. Drains should be laid at a minimum depth of 2 ft. to invert with a fall of not less than 1 in 200, trenches being back-filled to within some 7 in. of ground level using porous aggregate of 3 in.-3/4 in. gauge, e.g., gravel rejects or crushed stone. The back-filling should be blinded with fine, hard ash before top soil and turf are replaced."
