| Question: | "As you will no doubt know, there is considerable difficulty these days in getting supplies of good soil for use in compost top dressing for our bowling greens. With this in mind we have been looking around for suitable alternatives and one idea we have come up with is to obtain beet washings from the local sugar refinery. We have managed to get hold of a sample of the material (this is enclosed) and would appreciate your comments on its suitability for use on our bowling greens." |

| Answer/Response: | "Your sample has been examined by our soil physics laboratory and has been found to contain a high proportion of silt. Therefore we would not consider it to be suitable material to be used in top dressing. Top dressing should be free-draining - silt is not. As you will know from our report, we favour the use of a good sandy loam soil when artificial composts are made up, as for example from soil, sand and peat. We hope that your search for such material proves successful and we will be pleased to examine any further materials you may come across and comment accordingly." |
