Question:"We have a problem with woodrush on our 2nd fairway and despite spraying with a selective weedkiller, the weed continues to thrive and seems to be spreading. What would you advise to bring the situation under control?"
Answer/Response:"As you have observed, woodrush is quite resistant to selective herbicides but you may care to try a product containing mecoprop only or one with mecoprop in combination with ioxynil. More than one application will be required, spraying being repeated as necessary on two or three occasions (say, at monthly intervals) so long as conditions remain favourable. We would point out, however, that woodrush is normally associated with over-acid soils and usually the appropriate treatment is to apply ground limestone (carbonate of lime) at a rate which will raise the pH sufficiently to discourage the weed and encourage the grasses to grow more vigorously, whilst not applying excessive amounts which could lead to further problems. This rate is determined by chemical analysis and so we suggest you send us representative soil samples to allow us to carry out these tests and make appropriate recommendations for treatment. About 0.5 kg (1 lb.) of soil is required for our purposes and this can conveniently be collected using a hollow tine fork, inserted at random over the area in question (see attached leaflet)."
