Question:"Our green was laid with sea-marsh turf some five years ago and since that time has generally maintained its condition well. Recently, however, we have noticed that in certain areas the grasses appear to be dying off in small circular patches. The sample of turf enclosed shows typical signs of the general condition. Could you please tell us what the trouble is and suggest some treatment which will prevent the problem developing further?"
Answer/Response:"The turf has been found to be infected with a fungal disease commonly known as dollar spot. In this country this disease is rarely found except in sea-marsh turf and occasionally on a few cultivars of fescue. The disease seems to be encouraged by low fertlity conditions, particularly low levels of nitrogen. A number of fungicides can be used to bring the disease under control but obviously with the presence of susceptible grasses in the turf, the chance of recurrence once the effect of the fungicide has worn off is always present. Suitable fungicides to use include those containing benomyl, carbendazim, thiabendazole or thiophanate-methyl. During the growing season best results will be achieved with the materials when the applications are supplemented with dressings of nitrogenous fertilizer."
