Question:"We enclose a turf sample showing disease which occurs on some of our fairways. This appears as circular patches approximately 2 ft. in diameter which turn the fairway brown and leave the grass in the centre extremely thin. We are concerned about this, since otherwise the fairways were improving following an application of lime last autumn. Can you recommend treatment?"
Answer/Response:"The sample affected by Ophiobolus patch disease. This disease very commonly attacks turf after a lime dressing and the sample had a surface pH of 7.4 which is on the alkaline side. Regarding treatment the following are the accepted methods: (a) Control by repeated application of double strength organic mercury fungicides i.e. 2 oz. in 6 gal. of water per 40 sq. yd. This is extremely expensive and certainly not permanent unless the conditions are changed. (b) Surface pH can be lowered by using acidifying fertilizers. This also assists regrowth of grass into bare places. At this time of year you could apply a complete granular fertilizer at a rate of 2-3 cwt. per acre. (c) During late spring next year if the disease is still active treat infected areas with sulphate of ammonia (bulked with dry sand as carrier) at a rate of 1 ½ cwt. per acre. Apply this evenly and during showery weather. (d) Over-seeding can be carried out next spring where required. Prepare a fine and firm seed bed and sow a suitable fairways seeds mixture at 1 oz. per sq. yd."
