| Question: | "The enclosed turf from our bowling green shows a marked tufted grass growth. What causes it and can we control it?" |

| Answer/Response: | "The tufts in the turf you sent are disorganised growths of browntop (Agrostis tenuis). This is a desirable fine turf species, but these plants are distorted with very bunchy shallow rooting systems. The condition is frequently associated with excessive wetness, and the greens under-drainage should be checked. Excessive surface fibre might also be aggravating the problem. Plenty of aeration will help matters, followed by top dressing with a sharp sandy compost mixture including 4 cwts. of 1/8 in. mesh charcoal. Scarifying with wire rakes when growth resumes will assist in teasing the tufts out of the surface." |
