| Question: | "We have been troubled for some time with speedwell on our cricket outfield and on the soccer pitch, the weed having resisted all weed-killer applications in the past. We understand that some new weedkillers are now on the market which are effective against speedwell and we would welcome details. A sample is enclosed for definite identification." |

| Answer/Response: | "The weed which you enclosed is slender speedwell (Veronica filiformis) one of the most difficult species to eradicate. However, as you say, materials have recently become available which appear to be effective against this weed. Our experimental work involving these substances has not yet been entirely completed, but several proprietary products can be used at the manufacturer's recommended rates, e.g. Iotox at 6 pt. per acre or Actrilawn at 8 pt. Per acre. Most effective results will be obtained if spraying is carried out before the appearance of the blue speedwell flowers." |
