Question:"This used to be a very dry course but over the last two years pools of water have started to collect in the marked hollows which we have on the fairways and they are slow to drain away. Enclosed are samples of turf from such areas. Our course is situated on a deep gravelly type of soil. How should we drain the areas?"
Answer/Response:"Examination of the turf samples shows that there is a very thick water retentive fibre layer under which we find about 4 in. of rather compacted clay soil. Beneath the clay there are one or two fragments of gravel which we presume are typical of the sub-soil. Evidently water which can not penetrate through to the gravel because of the moisture retentive fibre layer and the impermeable compacted clay soil is collecting in the hollows. To alleviate the situation we suggest that you try to reduce the fibre and that you carry out spiking as often as possible. Harrowing in the autumn and spring period would be advantageous, a short toothed grassland type harrow being used on several occasions with gang mowing following to tidy up the surface. If you already carry out mechanical spiking on the fairways then particular attention should be given to the affected areas. Alternatively if the areas are small and time permits they could be hand forked using ordinary garden forks at close centres. It may be necessary to raise the low areas and remove the clay soil in them or even to carry out underground drainage but on the other hand the above treatment may suffice. In any case we would like to see the site before making further recommendations."
