Question:"Moles have recently invaded several of our greens and approaches and are causing considerable damage. Could you please tell us the most effective method of control?."
Answer/Response:"Several methods for the control of moles are available and all are reasonably effective. If a professional mole catcher is available locally then trapping could be one of the surest methods. The moles could also be gassed using either proprietary smoke bombs or the exhaust fumes from a tractor. Poisoning can produce good results using earthworms treated with red squill or strychnine, though care is necessary in the use of the latter as it is an extremely dangerous poison. On the other hand indirect control is often the best method of combating moles. Moles feed exclusively on earthworms and we would therefore suggest that you treat greens and surrounds with wormkiller e.g. chlordane or lead arsenate. In this way you will remove the earthworms and moles should soon cease to be a problem once their food supply has been removed."
