Question:"An exceptionally high tide has flooded three of our fairways. We have removed sand and other debris deposited on the fairways but the grass is brown and appears dead. We enclose a turf sample from an affected area and would appreciate your advice."
Answer/Response:"We have examined the turf sample and find that the sward, though sick, is not completely dead. An excessive quantity of salt is present however and it would be wise to water thoroughly to wash as much salt as possible out of the top soil. After salt water flooding there is a serious danger of the soil losing its structure, a process which could lead to drainage troubles. To counteract this we would recommend an immediate application of gypsum to affected areas at a rate of 2 tons per acre. Recovery of the grass would be further aided by an application of compound granular fertilizer at about 3 cwt. per acre about two weeks later."
