| Question: | "We have received your plan for the drainage of our rugby pitches and note that you advise 3 in. pipes for the herringbone system involved. It has been suggested that 4 or 6 in. pipes would be preferable, as some silting up is bound to occur in time and a larger pipe would leave more room for water flow if this occurs." |

| Answer/Response: | "We would not agree that 4 or 6 in. pipes are necessary in your case nor would we agree that silting up is inevitable. Provided the system is laid to sufficient but steady and even fall on a firm foundation with the pipes closely butted together so that water flow is in no way impeded, the system should function for a considerable number of years without excessive silting. A well laid system using 3 in. pipes will in fact silt up less quickly than a badly laid system utilizing 6 in. pipes. 4 or 6 in. pipes are normally only required for main drains laid on larger areas of land." |
