Question:"Quite extensive brownish yellow mottling has recently appeared on our square. We have applied no fertilizer since spring so that scorch is ruled out. Could you please suggest treatment? A sample of the affected turf is enclosed."
Answer/Response:"The turf has been examined by our biologist who finds that the mottling is caused by Corticium disease, easily recognizable by the bright red needles present on the grass shoots and leaves. Symptoms of the disease are quite common at this time of year but serious damage to the turf very seldom results. Corticium disease is encouraged to a marked degree by shortage of nitrogen and we would therefore suggest that you treat with sulphate of ammonia at about 3 lb. per 100 sq. yd. (suitably bulked with carrier of top soil) and water in if necessary. This will almost certainly produce a speedy recovery of affected areas. No fertilizer should be applied after the end of August however, as this may encourage the far more serious fusarium patch disease. If you consider the present corticium outbreak serious enough to require direct control you should apply an inorganic mercury fungicide though this is seldom necessary."
