Question:"At a recent Committee Meeting we discussed grass seed prices and ways of reducing the costs. What are your minimum sowing recommendations on heavily worn winter pitches to give good cover for the following playing season, and also rates for establishing a small extension to a pitch? Can we use some of the cheaper grasses in our mixtures?"
Answer/Response:"For adequate renovation of worn and bare places on your soccer and rugby pitches in the short summer period you are practically restricted to perennial ryegrass because of its rapid vigorous growth and wear resistance. It would be foolish to substitute cheaper grass species like red fescue, and there is little to be gained by choosing the slightly cheaper, but less good, cultivars of ryegrass. We recommend that you use S.23 or an equivalent cultivar and improve your renovation technique to enable the seed rates to be reduced a little. The key factor is a good seed bed, and when you have produced a fine and evenly firmed tilth, sow at ½ oz./sq. yd. and rake firmly into the surface. Where some grass remains and you are still able to prepare a good seed bed you might drop the rate to 1/3 oz./sq. yd. Subsequently, watering and additional fertilizer should be given to ensure proper development. For the new area similar considerations apply. Use a general playing field seed mixture of good cultivars. If the seed bed is known to be clean and prepared under good conditions you might lower the seed rate from 1 ½ cwt. to 1 ¼ cwt./acre. It may take a little longer before the area can be brought into play."
