Question:"The ground beneath many of our jumps is very hard and compacted. Is there anything we can do to make these landing areas a little softer?"
Answer/Response:"After any repairs and levelling that may be necessary in the spring give the areas in question a really thorough hollow tining. This can be done using one of the tractor drawn coring machines that are now available or alternatively, for smaller areas, you might hire the hand operated type of machine of even do the job with hand forks. Remove the soil cores and then apply a dressing of finely granulated peat at a rate of 3 or 4 lb./sq. yd. (more if you can) and work this right into the fork holes."
