Question:"Our Committee has been seriously considering the replacement of our three 18 in. motor mowers by a triple type of greens machine. Our course is a busy one and the Greenkeeper has increasing difficulty in finding times when cutting can be carried out without interfering too much with play. Have you any comments on the performance of this type of machine - we suspect that there may be surface damage from the power unit?"
Answer/Response:"Advantages of the triple type of greens mower are the speed with which one man can cut eighteen greens and therefore that the fact that they allow for more frequent cutting. They also provide more scope for other important work to be done, e.g. scarification and mowing on other areas such as tees and approaches etc. by the use of interchangeable cutter units. The speed factor alone may well over-ride all others on busy courses and wherever labour is at a premium. Surface damage should not occur if normal common sense mowing routines are observed, e.g. direction of cut varied, correct machine turning, fixed tracking around the perimeter of the green avoided. On the other hand surfaces might suffer if the machine is mishandled and performance may also suffer if care and maintenance are not properly carried out relative to the sophisticated construction and workings of the machine. Triple greens machines have not yet been in use long enough in this country for long term effects to be assessed but they do provide a good finish from the playing angle and in so doing save on time and labour with less operator fatigue or inconvenience to the players. This type of machine could also help to improve playing conditions generally if the time and labour saved on mowing is employed in other aspects of course maintenance - not used as a means for staff reduction. Finally it should be remembered that there is always the possibility of an emergency occurring through breakdown or other causes and it is therefore obviously advantageous to retain an alternative means of mowing should the need arise."
