| Question: | "Our Club has no Groundsman and we carry out maintenance work ourselves. We are concerned about using toxic chemicals. What safety precautions should we take?" |

| Answer/Response: | "Many fungicides, insecticides and herbicides which have to be used on turf are poisonous but should be safe provided they are used sensibly. Always read and follow the maker's instructions when using the materials. It is important to store them in a dry place, locked away from children and animals and not to transfer them to unmarked containers, lemonade bottles etc. Avoid getting chemicals on exposed skin or in the eyes, particularly the concentrates before dilution, and use protective clothing, rubber gloves, face masks, overalls etc. as specified. Thoroughly wash out sprayers before and after use. Also clean protective clothing and wash exposed parts of the body when the job is completed. Containers should not be re-used but disposed of carefully. Use common sense in carrying out all operations and if, despite all precautions, an operator feels ill after using poisonous chemicals, he should see a doctor immediately, giving the latter information on what has been used." |
