Question:"The surface of our bowling green has developed several sunken patches which badly affect play. We have tried fungicide with apparently little effect. I enclose a sample of affected turf and would welcome your advice."
Answer/Response:"The disease affecting your green is caused by a superficial basidiomycete such as described in Journal 49 last year. This occurs on fibrous turf, the fungus breaking down the organic matter, leading to the formation of sunken patches. If it were possible to encourage the disease to spread evenly over the whole surface it would be a useful means of removing fibre, but unfortunately, the fungus is not so obliging! Control is difficult, the disease responding little to most fungicides. The most effective method involves repeated treatment with an organic or inorganic mercury fungicide mixed in solution with a wetting agent. This should be watered on to the affected areas. Forking or hollow tining prior to treatment is beneficial. The sunken patches can be top dressed with sandy compost to prevent interference with play. As the disease is associated with the fibre layer, every measure should be taken to reduce this over the whole green by regular scarification and aeration - this will, of course, in itself, improve the playing surface."
