Question:"We are thinking of incorporating an artificial wicket into our square to minimise the playing pressure on natural wickets. Are you in favour and could you comment on the types of wicket available?"
Answer/Response:"We certainly feel that artificial wickets have a useful functions to perform as they permit an intensity of play not feasible on natural turf. The cost of maintaining natural turf is increasing all the time and there is also a lack of experienced grounds men capable of producing good wickets. In such circumstances alternative playing surfaces make a great deal of sense and are also very useful for net practice areas. As far as surfacing materials for artificial wickets are concerned a draft specification was produced for the Sports Council in 1984 in association with the Rubber and Plastics Research Association. A British Standard Specification is also likely in the near future based on the above. The majority of surfacing available in the U.K. at the moment is of good quality and a choice should be made on the basis of appearance and durability. Playing quality of the wicket generally depends more on what lies below the surface. Woven synthetic turf appears to be the most durable. As far as foundation materials are concerned, choice depends on whether you require a wicket which will play uniformly at all times or one which will vary according to weather conditions. Uniformity might for example be thought more suitable for training junior players. The choice of systems now available are 3-synthetic turf on dynamic base, e.g. hard porous, PVC on a solid base, e.g. concrete and lastly a synthetic turf with an artificial base laid directly on to a sand or soil bed. Any can give good results and choice should be made according to individual requirement."
