Question:"We have recently taken over an extra pitch which was formerly used for soccer. This we intend developing into a first class hockey pitch. At the present time the pitch contains considerable quantities of ryegrass and daisies and worms are also a problem. Recently completed soil analysis shows that the pH level is 6.9. We appreciate that an improvement can be produced by close mowing (boxing off clippings), weed control, worm control and top dressing but were wondering if the finer turf grasses would be encouraged, and weeds, worms coarse grass, etc. discouraged, by sulphur treatment aimed at producing more acid soil conditions."
Answer/Response:"The use of sulphur is usually restricted to golf fairways but in your particular circumstances we are of the opinion that it could very well help produce a better hockey surface. Before using sulphur in any situation it is necessary to lay down a small trial using various rates of application in order to assess exactly what effect is produced in a particular situation. The trial should be laid down in the spring and involves 6 plots each 4 metres x 4 metres laid down at the edge of the pitch away from the actual playing area. Three rates of sulphur should be used with two replicate plots at each rate. The rates should be 1.0 kg, 0.5kg and 0.75kg to each plot, using lime free sand or compost as a carrier to allow even application. Sulphur is a slow acting material and it may take several months before the most improved plot, and therefore the rate of application for your pitch, can be selected. The colour, weed, worms, dryness and firmness characteristics of the plots should be compared with the surrounding grass at intervals."
