Question:"Our head Greenkeeper has been discussing the use of sulphate of iron with some of this fellow greenkeepers at neighboring clubs and several appear to be using the material both during the summer and winter. Is this a useful practice?"
Answer/Response:"Many greenkeepers find it advantageous to use iron at intervals during the late autumn, winter and early spring primarily because of the cosmetic effects of the material. It produces a dark green colour even when the grass is not growing and this makes greens seem attractive to the members. There are real benefits as well in that iron increases resistance to fusarium path disease and can produce a useful acidifying effect for greens where pH levels are higher than they should be. In the winter iron should only be used when weather conditions are reasonable, it usually being most convenient to apply the material in liquid form as a spray, applying the iron at 5-10g/m2. In the growing season sulphate of iron can also be usefully incorporated into fertilizer materials in combination with fertilizers like sulphate of ammonia and fine hoof and horn meal. We would not, however advocate frequent use of straight iron dressing during the summer on the average green as it may add to dry patch and fibre problems during summer drought. In general we feel that sulphate of iron is a useful weapon in the greenkeepers' armory and could well be made use of more on a number of courses."
