Abstract/Contents:Discusses potential techniques for core aeration. Explains that core aeration is "the process of mechanically removing plugs of thatch and soil from the lawn. Aeration opens the soil, helps reduce compaction, improves water filtration, improves rooting, reduces thatch and acts in many ways to improve the lawn and reduce stress." Also discusses possible benefits of soil plugs, stating that they "break down and redistribute soil throughout the thatch layer." Suggests maintenance techniques for newly seeded lawns, stating that "depending on the type of seed, germination can be as short as seven days or as long as a month." States that "by alleviating the compaction and allowing greater water infiltration, [superintendents] automatically increase the amount of air brought into the root zone."
