Question:"We have had difficulty in establishing any kind of shelter belts on the course which is fully exposed to the salt-bearing Atlantic winds and located on the seashore."
Answer/Response:"On some courses where sand dunes provide some undulation more sheltered strips have been planted with low growing shrubs, e.g. sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) and dwarf willow (Salix caprea). Also gorse or whin (Ulex) Spanish broom (Spartium) and the dogwoods (Cornus) are used. You must, however, be prepared to lose a lot and in a position to provide replacements. The plants should be planted in good top soil. Once a bottom cover has established this provides more shelter and acts as a wind break. Some taller trees can then be considered. Of the conifers Monterey Cypress (Cupressus macrocarpa) and the Corsican Pine ( Pinus Laricio) are the most widely used under such circumstances."
