Abstract/Contents:Discusses possible benefits in consulting a golf course architect in golf course development. States that "the professional golf course architect has a raft of skills and experience which underpin his/her work, notably: an understanding of the classic influences and historical development of the game"; "ability to 'read' a piece of land and make full use of the natural features"; "a regard for aesthetics including balance, harmony and scale"; "knowledge of construction and project management so that the 'vision' can be successfully realised on the ground and playability year round is not compromised"; "sympathy with subsequent maintenance"; and "at least a passing knowledge of drainage and irrigation." Concludes that "there are many aspects to the role of the professional golf course architect and all these skills are applied regardless of the scale of the project. Golf club management is being increasingly called to account for sensible course investment and many now state that a qualified golf course architect should be engaged as part of their policy document...Good golf course architecture is timeless!"
