Question:"So that we can be sure of obtaining the right material would you please give us the chemical formula for sodium chlorate and inform us of the rate of application for killing weeds and undesirable grass in the soil prior to sowing. How soon after application can seeding be done? Is this the most suitable material for the purpose or are there others available."
Answer/Response:"The chemical formula for sodium chlorate is NaClO3 and the rate of application is 1 Kg. in 2 litres of water per 800 sq. metres. You must allow a considerable time to elapse before sowing grass seed and the best sequence of operations is the application of sodium chlorate in the autumn and the sowing of the grass seed the following spring. There are other materials which you might try, e.g. activated 3-Amino-I,2,4 Triazole the rate of application of which is 7.5 Kg. per hectare. Sowing can take place 6-8 weeks later. Alternatively, you could use a 50% solution of Diquat or Paraquat applied at 2.8 litres per hectare. It is possible to sow grass seed a week after application of these materials."
