Abstract/Contents:Presents a study examining "field data on soil microarthropod abundances from preexisting lawns and unmowed fields within an urbanized environment." Discusses sampling, stating that "soil pH, bulk density, moisture, texture, and carbon were similar among the three habitat types although soils from lawns tended to contain more carbon than the unmowed fields." Reports "soil mite abundances were found to be greatest in high-maintenance lawns and least in unmowed reference sites." Discusses three subordinal collembolan groups: poduromorpha, entomobryomorpha, and symphypleona. States that "the collembolan groups are differentiated by morphological features that reflect adaptations to their preferred habitat within the soil-litter profile." Concludes that "mowing and chemical applications in lawns affects soil mites and the three suborder groups of collembolans in different ways."
