| Abstract/Contents: | Briefly discusses a plan "that will proctect the legendary 18th hole at Kiawah Island Golf Resort's Ocean Course [in Kiawah Island, South Carolina] while also keeping in place a nearby lagoon that is home to about 50 piping plovers." States that "the small shorebird is on the federal government's endangered species list." Reports that "the original plans called for scraping sand from a nearby developing lagoon, home to the piping plovers, and the construction of a berm to protect the green from future storms...The revised project leaves three to four times as much ground for the birds as the original proposal and reduces by half the amount of sand that will be removed from the lagoon and tidal sand spit." Concludes that "the $2 million project is scheduled to be completed in July [2006], just before the piping plovers return from their summer migration in the Great Lakes region." |
