Abstract/Contents:Discusses the role of the golf course general manager, stating that "the ideal general manager has a working knowledge of course conditioning, retail, and dining to produce the optimal balance of revenue and profit." Explains possible advantages golf course superintendents and golf professionals have when becoming a general manager, as well as possible weaknesses. Recommends bolwing alley managers as the ideal candidate for general manager, stating that "they bring an understanding of the recreational consumer, they've been operating in an environment of oversupply for the past five to 10 years and they've fought the battle of raising awareness in a mature recreational activity." Concludes that "there are other professions outside the golf industry that have, out of necessity, been forced to learn and refien the skills of generating revenue, expense management and marketing that will be the key to golf's success."
