Abstract/Contents:Discusses research conducted to determine "how different brands of spikes affect conditions on greens." Reports that "several clubs with bentgrass or Poa annua greens have banned or are considering banning certain types of alternative spikes that they believe are too aggressive, including some that tested well in...studies" conducted by Thomas Nikolai, Ph.D., and turfgrass academic specialist at Michigan State University. Details how clubs can conduct tests to determine the effects of cleats on putting greens by "dividing a practice green or nursery green into plots measuring at least 3 feet by 3 feet with each section assigned to a different cleat model. Replication, which Nikolai did in his studies is not necessary." Reports that a Professional Golfers' Association Tour study "also showed that flat-bottom shoes, such as FootJoy Classics, rated worse than shoes with molded soles when both types were outfitted with alternative spikes. Nikolai calls it the 'snowshoe effect,' meaning that the flat-bottom shoes have fewer contact points to distribute weight." Concludes that "from a mathematical standpoint, this makes sense since the increased points of contact on the combination outsole decreases the (pounds per square inch) at each point...this is not unlike showshoes increasing the surface contact area allowing an individual to trave atop the snow."
