Abstract/Contents:Discusses research conducted on drought-tolerant turf, stating that "Mohammad Pessarakli, Ph.D., who specializes in the study of stress tolerance of plants at the University of Arizona, has found a slow-growing strain of salt grass that he describes as 'absolutely revolutionary.'" Describes the strain, stating that it is a "salt- and drought-tolerant grass [that] has survived [all of 2005] without water in testing at the university. The saltgrass also thrives on water that contains double the amount of salt found in ocean water. That means superintendents could use low-quality water to maintain the turf." Reports that "turf experts say the saltgrass works well at preventing soil eroision, but add that it typically is not found in areas where erosion is a problem." Concludes that "working in conjunction with David Kopec, Ph.D., a professor in the university's department of plant sciences, Pessarakli and his team have identified eight saltgrass species from the 200 originally collected that would fit the bill as true lawn-type turf. These plants exhibited good, green color, high shoot density, were softer to the touch, and covered the soil completely under mowing stress."
