Abstract/Contents:Discusses how higher fuel prices are affecting golf course maintenance budgets for 2006, stating that "budgets were ratched up soon after fuel prices topped $3 per gallon in many parts of [the United States]. Skyrocketing prices were just part of the fallout from hurricanes Katrina and Rita, which crippled oil production in the Gulf of Mexico and shut down many of the country's oil and gas refineries." States that the city of Nampa, Idaho has given Charles Denham, superintendent of municipal Ridgeview and Centennial golf courses, "an extra $85,000 largely to cover higher fuel prices and anticipated increases in the cost of maintenance supplies." Discusses the aftermath of hurricanes Katrina and Rita at Ellendale Country Club in Houma, Louisiana, stating that "the private club spent an additional $10,000 on labor to clean up the course after the storms, but it's fuel costs that have Carey Spence [superintendent] worried." States that "operating machinery...is just one aspect of the effect of higher energy prices. Fertilizer, for example, is more expensive because natural gas is used in the production of urea...Shipping costs have also risen because of higher fuel costs." Concludes that "it's impractical...to budget for the unexpected."
