Abstract/Contents:Discusses research focusing on soil fertility and paspalum presented at the 2005 meeting of the American Society of Agronomy. States that "golf course superintendents spend a lot of time trying to decipher the code that will lead them to producing healthier turf with less chemical pesticide applications." Describes studies that "examined the role of phosphorus in turfgrass performance...studies looked at annual bluegrass encroachment as well as turfgrass growth and color and even tissue phosphorus levels." Details "other studies that looked at nutrient management on cool- and warm-season grasses." States that "nitrogen management should be the focus of [a] fertility program." Discusses possible benefits to paspalum, stating that "[it] offers significantly higher visual quality and is more salt tolerant than Bermudagrass. Research shows that paspalum can be managed using seawater." Concludes that "turfgrass research can be excruciatingly slow at providing answers to our most pressing questions...researchers are reactive rather than proactive in terms of finding solutions to turf problems."
