Abstract/Contents:Profiles Sagamore Hampton Golf Club in North Hampton, New Hampshire, highlighting their use of organic maintenance procedures. States that "in 1962 [Peter] Luff demanded that his brand-new, family-owned [golf course] be maintained through organic principles. The greens were mowed by hand. Earthworms not only were encouraged, but nurtured. Use of golf cars was forbidden...Luff...kept a detailed log of materials used to maintain the golf course. Pesticides and chemicals were applied only in dire emergencies. The amount of pesticides and chemicals used annually was not to exceed 14 ounces." Mentions the use of compost tea. States that "the whole idea behind compost tea is that it increases the micro bacterial activity in the soil...The compost tea outcompetes the disease organisms and lessens the impact of the fungus." Also states that Peter Luff's son, Richard, would "rather Sagmore Hampton be 100 percent organic, he knows that goal is not realistic...Despite advancements in organic practices, Luff believes superintendents...are under increased pressure to keep their golf courses pristine."
