Abstract/Contents:Discusses how "the [Southern United States] the majority of sports fields are established using warm-season turfgrasses, with bermudagrass the number one choice." Suggests that "while bermudagrass provides an excellent, durable playing surface for sports fields, one of its drawbacks is that with the onset of cooler temperatures and longer nights in the fall, its growth rate will start to slow down." States that "to overcome this problem, many sports field managers will overseed their fields with a cool-season turfgrass such as perennial ryegrass to provide a more aesthetically pleasing field and to improve playability." Explains that "along with proper timing, seedbed preparation is an important step in achieving a successful stand of cool-season turfgrass on sports fields." Suggests that "while perennial ryegrasses provide an excellent playing surface when warm-season turfgrasses are dormant, one of its major drawbacks is getting ryegrass to transition out of the field in late spring to early summer." States that "transitional herbicides applied in 80-degree weather will control perennial ryegrass in about two weeks." Concludes that "fall overseeding of bermudagrass sports fields is an effective method to provide turf cover for late fall, winter and early spring sports. Use of the new transitional herbicides provides a tool to help manage a successful transition into the perennial ryegrass in the fall and back to the bermudagrass the following year when temperatures reach levels sufficient for bermudagrass regrowth."
